Hoe ziet onze digitale toekomst eruit? Welke rol spelen mens en machine daarin? In de hybride tentoonstelling Reflecties word je aan de hand van online en offline installaties meegenomen in een verhaal over algoritmes, kunstmatige intelligentie en machine learning technology. Wie ben jij? Kan de machine jou leren kennen? Hoe werkt AI? Wordt jouw leven beter als algoritmen je beslissingen ‘optimaliseren’? Is jouw expertise nog iets waard als machines sneller denken en beter zoeken? Wat blijft er dan van jou over?

De tentoonstelling nodigt het publiek uit om op deze vragen te reflecteren en stil te staan bij de maatschappelijke uitdaging waar we nu voor staan. AI-experts verwachten dat tegen 2060 de machine in álle domeinen de mens de baas zal zijn. Maar als mensen niet langer nodig zijn vanwege hun cognitieve of artistieke vaardigheden, waar zijn we dan nog wél voor nodig? Als machines straks beter dan wijzelf kunnen denken, rekenen, schilderen en componeren, als hun verhalen pakkender en schrijnender zijn dan die van ons, waaraan ontlenen we als mens dan onze betekenis en wat is dan onze nieuwe rol? Om als mens in 2060 nog gelukkig te kunnen zijn is het nodig dat we nu nadenken over onze digitale toekomst, over de relatie tussen mens en machine en over onze menselijke waardigheid binnen dit geheel.

Reflecties is een samenwerking tussen Universiteit Twente en Tetem. De tentoonstelling is ontwikkeld in het kader van het project Make Happiness van Tetem en het onderzoeksproject Man and Machine – Learning in the Digital Society door professor Mieke Boon met studenten van de Master opleiding Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society, de Bachelor opleiding ATLAS en BMS lab. De tentoonstelling is vormgegeven door kunstenaar Jan Merlin Marski.

What does our digital future look like? What is the role of humans and machines in it? In the hybrid exhibition Reflections, you are invited to explore offline and online installations and become part of a story about algorithms, artificial intelligence and machine learning technology. Who are you? Can the machine get to know you? How does AI work? Does your life get better when algorithms ‘optimize’ your decisions? Is your expertise worth anything if machines think faster and perform better? What is left of you then?

The exhibition invites the public to reflect on these questions and on the social challenges we are currently facing. AI experts expect that by 2060, machines will dominate human beings in all domains. But if people are no longer useful because of their cognitive or artistic skills, what are we still needed for? If machines will soon be able to think, calculate, paint and compose better than ourselves, if their stories are more touching than ours, from what do we as humans derive our meaning and what is our new role? In order to be happy as a human being in 2060, it is necessary that we think about our digital future NOW, about the relationship between man and machine and about our human dignity within this reality.

Reflections is a collaboration between the University of Twente and Tetem. The exhibition is  developed within the framework of the Make Happiness project of Tetem and the research project Man and Machine – Learning in the Digital Society by Professor Mieke Boon with students of the Master’s program Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society, the Bachelor’s program ATLAS and BMS lab. The exhibition is designed by artist Jan Merlin Marski.
